6th WCDM’s 1st Pre-Conference Event Details: Objective, Structure, and What Will Happen?

The 6th World Congress on Disaster Management is going to be held from 28th Nov – 1st Dec 2023, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

The prelude to the 6th WCDM is a pre-conference event to ensure mass awareness about disaster resilience in different parts of the country.

The 6th WCDM 1st. Pre-Conference event has been scheduled to be hosted in Dehradun on October 13, 2023, on International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction #DRRDay 2023 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Objectives of the 6th WCDM 1st Pre-Conference Event

The objective of the 6th WCDM 1st Pre-Conference is to sensitize all the stakeholders about the 6th World Congress on Disaster Management.

Not only does this ensure the right environment is created, but it also urges active participation from leading institutions, national and international disaster management and rehabilitation agencies, governments, policymakers, academia, and civil society.

Also, the workshop will provide insights and recommendations for enhancing the capacities of the PHEDM workforce in India.

What will happen in this event?

The main attraction of this event is the workshop on Public Health Emergency and Disaster Management (PHEDM). PHEDM is the collaboration of Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) and Disaster Management (DM), which is done with the help of the following institutions:
  • The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM),
  • Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA),
  • The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),
  • Directorate General of Health Services (Dte. GHS),
  • Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW),
  • U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Country Office India

to develop a five-tiered Public Health Emergency and Disaster Management (PHEDM) framework.

Structure of the event

1. Inauguration Session

  • Welcome, Keynote, Special and Chief Guest Address

2. Plenary Session: Lessons For Himalayan Ecosystems

  • Community and civil society involvement in disaster resilience
  • Climate change and enhanced disaster risk on Himalayan states and ways forward
  • Need for disaster-resilient infrastructure for Uttarakhand
  • Assessment of carrying capacity of mountains—Ecology first
  • Involvement of communities and students for DRR

3. Technical Session: Innovation To Build Capacity From Community To Decision Maker

  • Panel Discussion (PHEDM)

4. Concluding Session: Audience Inputs, Feedback and Ways forward

This panel discussion will bring together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders to deliberate on the strategies and actions needed to develop, build, and sustain a resilient public health emergency and disaster management workforce, especially in the Himalayan region.
